Cora, recently released from prison, is barely holding her life together as she navigates sobriety, life with her disapproving mother, and a strained relationship with her ex. All she wants is to do the right thing to win joint custody of her daughter. When a series of misfortunes converge to threaten everything Cora has worked so hard to rebuild, the limits of her resolve are put to the test. 

The latest film from Brain Jail Productions, A Strange and Mournful Day is a sobering reflection on the the hardships imposed on those looking for nothing more than a second chance by a system too often unwilling to forget.

The quests of three little league coaches — the first, a legend seeking a record title; the second, a mom trying to prove herself in a man’s world; and the third, an American expat in Japan who has appropriated the ways of the Zen masters to guide his team and to reconnect with his own estranged father — converge as they seek glory in the only place left for them to prove their worth: the RJH Youth Sports World Championship.


The screenplay was named a quarterfinalist at the PAGE INTERNATIONAL SCREENWRITING AWARDS and earned second prize in the EXPOSE IT! COMEDY SCREENWRITING COMPETITION.
